Our beaches belong to everyone

Finally, the “People’s Lawsuit” will be heard in the proper forum, where it belongs, in front of Maine’s Supreme Court. (See story Portland Press Herald, Feb. 2024)

That court made a big mistake in 1989. It extinguished centuries-old rights to unrestricted use of all Maine beaches. A recent Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court wrote that there is “strong and compelling argument” for revisiting the flawed decision, which she described as “founded upon a faulty legal analysis.” Now the Court has a chance to correct its historic mistake.

This website is a resource for all the people in Maine, keeping you up to date on all legal and legislative efforts to return Maine’s beaches and intertidal lands to the public.

WMTW Reporter Jim Keithley’s story about a beachfront cottage owner calling the police to kick on two 7-year-olds off the beach. Their crime? Playing a game on the sand.

Watch the video below to see some truly absurd behavior. Erecting a seaweed fence! Winning “The People’s Lawsuit” will end this type of foolishness once and for all.
